Looking down the famous 199 steps of Whitby on a summers evening. It is a view worth the effort of the climb. These "church stairs" were first recorded over six hundred years ago, and in the early 1700's were still wooden. It is a good climb from the Church Street below to the church itself, and there are still resting places at regular intervals. Whitby is divided in two by the River Esk. St. Mary's Church and Whitby Abbey are on the eastern headland. Although the Abbey is accessible by road, the able bodied should experience climbing the 199 steps to the summit! As you return to the town you can always hear those on the ascent count each step, just to make sure that there really are 199! |
