North Yorkshire Moors Railway
Let the North Yorkshire Moors Railway take you on a nostalgic journey
back to the glorious age of steam. Travel through 18 miles of stunning
countryside, in comfortable carriages, through picturesque stations
pulled by a majestic steam locomotive. Simply enjoy the peaceful
timelessness of it all.
Running between the picturesque market town of Pickering to Grosmont,
18 miles away, the line travels through some of the most dramatic
scenery in Britain. The first stop after Pickering is the remarkably
isolated station of Levisham, in a location which has not changed
in over 100 years and is remarkably untouched by modern day influences.
From Levisham it is only a short ride to Newton Dale Halt which
is a request stop only and is situated in the midst of Newton Dale
forestry and makes an ideal stop for both walkers and cyclists.
Back on the train, the track climbs steadily through the breathtaking
North York Moors National Park to the beautiful country station
of Goathland. This station regularly appears in Yorkshire Television's
'Heartbeat' series as 'Aidensfield' and recently hosted the film
crew and actors for the new Harry Potter film 'The Philosopher's
Stone' where Goathland appears as 'Hogsmead'.
The journey continues on through some of the most exciting scenery
of the whole line and arrives at Grosmont, located just 6 miles
away from the seaside port of Whitby.

Darlington Railway Centre & Museum
This year we celebrate one hundred and seventy six years of railways
in the town, railways which have changed the face of travel and
changed the course of history.
Located within the grounds of Darlington Railway Centre are Darlington
Railway Preservation Society, the A1 Steam Locomotive Trust and
the North Eastern Locomotive Preservation Group.
The society was formed in 1980 to preserve local relics of the
Railway Heritage of Darlington. Inside the workshops are several
locomotives that were either built or spent their working lives
in and around the Darlington Area. These include a diesel shunter,
which worked at Cleveland Bridge when they were based in Smithfield
Road, an electric locomotive from the Darlington Chemical Works
on West Auckland Road, and No39, a large 0-6-0 Tank Engine, built
at Robert Stephenson's works in Thompson Street.
The Society's biggest project is the full restoration of the BR
2-6-0 Mixed Traffic loco 78018. This engine was built in the North
Road works at Darlington and spent much of its life working between
the Western and the Eastern side of the Pennines, over the ferocious
Stainmore Summit. It is expected to take several years to complete
the rebuilding of this engine and it is hoped eventually that 78018
may run over the line from Bishop Auckland to Eastgate (The Weardale
Line).
